Washington, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho) released the following statement upon the Senate’s confirmation of Army Secretary Mark Esper’s nomination to lead as Secretary of Defense:

“As the United States contends with evolving challenges abroad, it’s imperative that we have a seasoned, even-handed leader of the Department of Defense,” said Senator Risch. “Army Secretary Mark Esper has a history of solid and steady leadership at the Pentagon and in the U.S. Army, and is highly regarded by Republicans and Democrats alike. Secretary Esper is more than qualified for the post of Secretary of Defense, and I congratulate him on his well-deserved confirmation.” 

Secretary Esper was confirmed by a vote of 90-8.
