Colyer Herefords and Angus Ranch
Named March Small Business of the Month
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-ID), chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, has named Colyer Herefords and Angus Ranch of Bruneau, Idaho as the “Small Business of the Month” for March 2018. Colyer Hereford and Angus Ranch will be recognized in the Congressional Record of the Senate.
“It is my pleasure to recognize Colyer Herefords and Angus Ranch as Small Business of the Month,” said Chairman Risch. “Over the past forty-two years, this family-owned business has maintained an exceptional product, while incorporating new innovations into their business model and displaying dedication to the quality of service they provide their customers. Apart from Colyer’s commitment to their product, their commitment to Bruneau and to the entire cattle community in Idaho is evidenced by the family’s numerous service and volunteer efforts. I know I speak for many in saying they are a prime example of the American entrepreneurial spirit and are highly deserving of this recognition.”
Founded by Ray and Bonnie Colyer, Colyer Herefords and Angus Ranch has been a family-run operation for many decades. Ray and Bonnie’s son Guy and grandson Kyle currently manage 250 registered Hereford cows and 60 replacement heifers on the ranch. Ray and Bonnie also added an Angus cattle herd to the ranch as a response to their commercial customer needs for a type of cattle uniquely suited to Idaho’s environment. The ranch has adapted a number of innovative technologies to help select the finest bulls and sires to breed superior cattle for their customers, including ultrasound, DNA markers, herd management software, and embryo transplants. Several members of the family serve as emergency first responders on a volunteer basis in the Bruneau area. Guy is a member of several local and national cattle associations, including the Owyhee County Cattle Association, the Idaho Cattle Association, and the National Cattleman’s Beef Association. He also serves on the board of directors of the American Hereford Association. Guy and his wife Sherry have also served as advisors for the American Junior Hereford Association to help mentor the next generation of ranchers.
The Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship oversees proposed legislation on matters relating to entrepreneurship and provides oversight of the Small Business Administration. The committee also researches, investigates and reports all problems relating to America’s small businesses to the full Senate. As Chairman, Risch honors America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs in the Senate each month.
